 ABOUT THE ARTIST

Margaret Manchee, Chartered Accountant, combines a career in accounting with a fine art practice. She was born in Hong Kong and moved to Australia in the late 1980s. Since graduating in Fine Art from the University of Melbourne - Victorian College of the Arts in 2008, Margaret has been a teacher at Firestation Print Studio in Melbourne.

Margaret creates copper etchings, mono-printing, paintings/collages, papier mache and artist books. The recurring motif “circle” in her work came from Margaret’s Indonesian and Chinese heritage. She explains,

“The recurring circle motifs that feature in my work come from my Indonesian and Chinese heritage. I am driven by the creative inspiration just as much as I thrive on developing technical skills to push the boundaries of different physical media. I started making artist's books on my dining room table during Melbourne's second lockdown, in July 2020, because I couldn’t get to my studio. More than 2 year later, and I have now produced over 180 books".

Her work has been the subject of four solo shows, and is included in several group exhibitions, international exchange projects, private collection and museum collection including the NGV and the NGA. She was presented in 2021 Impact 11 International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking conference. Margaret has won a few awards and has been short-listed in 2021 Northern Beaches Library Artist’s Book Award, Castlemaine 2021 Experimental Print Prize as well as Bluethumb Art Prize (Sculpture) 2022. Most recently, her artist book “The Wheel” has been acquired as part of Northern Beaches Library Artist’s Book collection in 2023.
